From Veliko Tarnovo to Devetaki village

A view to Stara Planina mountain at Momin Sbor village

The day was 14 May 2015, when I decided finally to visit Devetaska Cave. The topic about this cave is on another page.

I chose to travel on unconventional route going from Veliko Tarnovo and diverted through the Dobromirka village towards Vishovgrad. Shortly before entering the village itself has a slightly uphill road, from where opens magnificen view of Botev peak, which is fed between two hills. However, to see such a view, the weather must be clear.

Before Vishovgrad, I turn left to Gorsko Kalugerovo and Biala Reka villages. From there I took the road to Gorsko Kosovo village, which is located just below the wall of Stamboliyski dam. Then I took the road that goes closely to the shore of the dam in no more than 10-20 meters. There are many spots where you can stop and go to the shore of Stamboliiski dam.

Once I passed the dam, I took left to Kramolin village, which road strewn with many holes. About one hundred meters from there, I noticed meadow with poppies, among which were many of the rare white poppies. I could not resist to the photographic temptation, stepped among the poppies and start shooting. Even more beautiful was the fact that the bees gather pollen from poppies. What kind of honey will be produced from these flowers!

Shortly before Kramolin village, I noticed flying Cuckoos. Immediately stopped the car and began to shoot. Especially interesting moment was when the little bird - Red-backed Shrike (Lanius collurio) tangled to significantly larger Cuckoo (Cuculus canorus).

Stalking Cuckoos I turn on a dirt road and after about 15 meters I stood face to face with one male European roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). I never expected such a meeting, especially in the middle of the day, but luck is luck regardless the time of day. The deer stood motionless for about a minute, when I slowly and carefully picked up the photocamera and made some shots. Then he ran, but unfortunately I shoot at low speed and so the photos of running deer were not so good.

After Kramolin village, I continued to Agatovo village and from there to Brestovo village. On the road between the villages, there are many wonderful views to the North Djendem of “Stara Planina” mountain, of course, if the weather is clear, as it was that day.

At Brestovo village I turn right to Devetaki village. After I left the village, stopped at a hill from where is visible a great view of almost entire middle “Stara Planina” mountain - unique spot.

From there, the road to Devetaki village is quite beautiful and underused. Minutes later on my way on the road, a European Hare (Lepus europaeus) goes out on the road, and after a short stalking, I managed to photograph it.

Then I took to Devetashka cave, but as I said above, this is a topic of another page.
