Winter walk to Mazalat hut

Mazalat hut

In early February 2017, with a friend of mine decided to visit the Mazalat hut for a weekend. After nearly a month-long snow we expected to a lot of snow in the mountain. So we chose hut, which can be reached without much vertical drop.

We left Uzana locality or rather “Partisan song” hut. Walking on more than a meter of snow was not a problem as the trail was well beaten. The weather was sunny and relatively warm for the season. After about 3 hours we arrived to the hut.

In the evening the weather warms even more, which was not good news predisposing of softening snow, and hence the eventual sinking in the snow. To mention that we were without snowshoes.

The next day we noticed a rain and decided to wait in a warm within the hut. By 9:00AM all visitors to the Mazalat hut had already left. By noon the rain stopped and the sun came out, but at the expense of intensified wind.

It's time to go. In the woods right after the hut, the walking was not good as yesterday. The snow had softened and every few meters we floundered around span. But the great sinking yet to come.

Reaching the summit of Korita peak problems started. Walking along its west ridge we sank to crotch at almost every step. Just get up and do one step and the other has all your foot sinks into the snow. That way we “walk” almost half a kilometer. We considered, however sinking laughing because we watched each other how suddenly sinking groaning and then subtracted from the hole.

With the start of the descent to the fountain, the things have improved significantly and hence “Partisan song” hut track was a song. The return way took about 6 hours.
